Direction of force refers to the direction of momentum of an attack. This is typically used for naming conventions of strikes or other movements. For example, an inside crescent kick vs. an outside crescent kick.

Directions[]

There are six directions of force, but these can be combined as well.

  • Forward - force travels directly forward (front kick)
  • Backward - force travels directly backward (back kick)
  • Inside - force travels toward the midline from outside (round kick)
  • Outside - force travels away from the midline from inside (backfist)
  • Upward - force travels upwards (uppercut)
  • Downward - force travels downwards (axe kick)

Types of Direction[]

  • Curving - movement does not take a linear path (hook punch, round kick)
  • Linear - movement takes a straight path (jab)
